History of Squadron UK

1970's

Dungeons and Dragons - the world's first Role-playing game published.

Superhero 2044 - the world's first Superhero RPG.

1980's

Simon Burley & Pete Haines meet at Birmingham University Wargames Club.

After a brutal game of Superhero 2044, Pete and the others round on Simon to say:

"That wouldn't happen in the comics"

Simon produces some rules based on the player's comments. They are a success.

Pete adds some original twists to the rules.

Simon produces and amateur version, published as "Golden Heroes".

Tour of Comics and Games Conventions re-fighting classic comicbook battles.

Games Workshop buy the rules. A "Marvel" version is prepared.

TSR get the Marvel licence. Games Workshop publish a non-Marvel version of Golden Heroes supported by Scenarios (Legacy of Eagles, Queen Victoria and the Holy Grail) and articles in the magazine White Dwarf.

Simon produces amateur fanzine - Superhero UK - which later becomes Fantazia.

Game falls out of production.

1990's

Rise of the Internet. Golden Heroes becomes popular as a basis for "Play by e-mail games".

Fan Group set up on YAHOO.

2000's

Simon Burley discovers the Yahoo fan group. Meets the artist Dave Eadie through that group. With the support of that group a new version of the game is prepared.

Squadron UK is launched.
